                  Crabbing

New  Jersey Crab Regulations

‘I Caught Crabs at Red Bank Marina!’

The easiest way to crab is to use a drop line or trap with bait. The most popular bait is bunker, which is available in our bait shop. When you feel a tug on the line, pull it up and lift the crab with your net.

We offer rowboats or motor boats for crabbing. The advantage of a rowboat is multiple lines can be dropped.
We require valid ID for Motor Boat rentals.

Handling your Crabs
The easiest way to keep your crabs is in a bushel basket.
Keep it as cool as possible.

You need to distinguish between male and female crabs. The blue claw male has blue claws and the females have red claws. If you turn crab upside down to see the abdomen, the male crab has an inverted “T” while the female’s has a triangular shape.

New Jersey prohibits the removal of female crabs from its waters. The minimum size crab must be 4½ inches from point to point. Specific regulations are available from the Fish, and Wildlife Digest: Marine Edition.

Rinse crabs in fresh water, making sure they are alive. Drop crabs in a pot of boiling water for 8 to 10 minutes. If you want a spicy flavor add “old bay seasoning” to the pot. The shells will turn bright red, let them cool. If you want extra juicy crabs,
boil them in beer.
